All I want to do is drown you in this beer All I want to do is get a suntan while I'm here She leans at the end of the bar - six more steps to climb Would you like to come out for a drink with me some time? Do you expect me to wait for you - at the end of the bar Like all the other barmen's girlfriends do? I'm going to tidy up my clothes for the doorman at Tangier And all your friends from Georgia You said you were traditional - and I was relieved to know Now the morning is bright and new All want to do - drown you in this beer All I want to do - suntan while I'm here She leans along - six steps to climb Would you like to come for a drink some time? Would you like to come for a drink with me some time? Do you expect me to wait for you? Do you expect me to wait for you - at the end of the bar Like all the other barmen's girlfriends do? I'm going to tidy up my clothes for the doorman at Tangier And all your friends from Georgia You said you were traditional - and I was relieved to know Now the morning is bright and new

Sol Levy 04:01
You take me seriously - in Sol Levy I changed your name - but you saved me With the sun behind you - in Gouger St Seventeen - and I could jump Or offer to clean And we'll meet up - in a coffee shop A meeting place And you're okay The weather goes our way Dirty back road - to interstate You were crying - and your tears roll Down your freckled skin - I love so well And I looked back twice - and the mall was tired Like social initiatives - no one gets behind This is your song What took you so long? Where are your funky shoes? Fortune is yours and winners lose You take me seriously - in Sol Levy I changed your name - but you saved me With the sun behind you - in Gouger St

Orphan School Creek - Orphan School Creek Next to the banisters and guardrails There was a beginning - initials on the wall Into the chalkboard - ear to the door He listens There was an old play backdrop A ladder to the roof And I used to fantasise that I was a fugitive
4.
Schneider 04:17
$3.50 for soup and bread It threw a damper on things when you said You never really broke up with your last boyfriend But we were young and we could score From any one of a number of students Hanging around the bathroom door And you know I'm tired Do you have to tell the world? I may have spent too much time alone you said And we would confide He was still a friend to you And other things besides

It's what you think I won't be One more drink and I'll be anyone's I heard you played the guitar I hope you don't hold it against me And you've got energy to get to grips with anyone I've got to check the house and lock the doors And turn it inside out A compulsive girl - a seasick girl - a personal world I can't believe that you feel inferior to me It shouldn't be this way I've only seen you a few times It's what you think I won't see I'm feeling pretty bad about it You married an American But now you're on the rocks your friends say And I saw you at the sad Cafe And I remembered your silver dress And how you couldn't guess And in your storybook - mine was best And that crayon smell - face paint on - face paint on Metamorphosized into air - into air I don't know what to wear - compulsive girl - obsessive girl

Morning Sun 03:16
On the beaches here coastal radio waves appear As we're sleeping in the morning sun On my dual cassette deck you twist my mind - Caroline I'm thinking of you in the morning sun I will find you outside With better words and better cries and better ways to say goodbye I am with you in the morning sun You stop me on the Esplanade For all the commuters it's very hard But I found you in the morning sun I will find you outside

My New Body 04:31
Let me introduce you to my new body You'd have a ladder to the sky if you were I And I worked hard to get this far An interesting animal is all I am and all you are And I don't like to leave a mark in the chair I'm sitting in I got to look sharp for the cam cause it's all I am And the best people in the world look like that girl In magazines Let me introduce you to my new body You'd have a ladder to the sky if you were I And I worked hard to get this far An interesting animal is all I am and all you are

I remember a time a few months ago You were at my house - and for the sake of connections You were called out to go to the gallery You didn't want to - they didn't need you And in truth I was looking forward to a lazy day with her But we went there She held me and cried 'My art is just a schoolgirl's art - I'm just a student' A quiet season in my own room Everyone's trapped by their own nature And my family are the people I look forward to seeing again This is for them In downtown - cool my boots - little kids on seesaws Finches in the grass - I wish I had some bread to give them Sun and birds - sun and birds

about

This record actually has a story.

I was living in Great Buckingham St, Redfern, Sydney, during the final months of 2001. I had just finished the final Maudlins record in painstaking detail, and was enjoying the freedom of putting down some new ideas without caring too much about the finished product. There was a spare room in the house, and I began laying down ideas.

In early 2002, I moved to London, and in my backpack was a hastily burned CDR with the title 'Redfern Demos' scribbled on the disc. As time went on, I got used to listening to and enjoying these 9 songs in their existing order and arrangements, and vaguely promised myself to record them properly one day.

Over the years, I made progress in small steps, between other records. An early version of 'Morning Sun' appeared in 2008. 'The Backpacker Song' was half completed in 2009. 'Schneider' I managed to get down in 2013. In mid to late 2014 I pushed myself to get it completed, and in February 2015 it was finally done.

Demos are difficult to re-record, especially when you have listened to them for so long just the way they are. How do you create full arrangements while keeping the raw quality of the originals? How do you match what is coming out of the speakers with the perfect sounds that are in your head?

It's been fun trying.

Orphan Train Project is a musical journey that that began thirty years ago in the secluded hills above Adelaide, South Australia. First records were made on busted tape decks on a bedroom floor. Years passed. I lived in different places. Tape decks became 4 tracks which became sequencers.
